National Institute of Oceanography (NIO), Goa was instituted in 1966 (please correct). This is a CSIR laboratory. It has four institutes with headquarter institute at Goa. Other three regional centers are located at Kochi, Mumbai and Visakhapatnam.

Research Area
Waters study around India. Work emphasis is on oceanic studies. Institute has constituted following mendate
- To develop knowledge on physical, chemical, biological, geological, geophysical, engineering and pollution aspects of the waters around India
- To provide support to various industries, government and non-government organisations through consultancy and contract research
- To disseminate knowledge on the waters around India
