Indian Institute of Petroleum (IIP), Dehradun was instituted in 1959 as a CSIR laboratory and started functioning from Delhi in 1960. In 1963 it was moved to Dehradun. This institute took the organizational help from Institut Francais du Petrole (IFP), France, the world renowned petroleum research organisation, under UNESCO programme during 1960 to 1964. IIP is concerned with the invention and discovery of petroleum products and their processing in India. Technological forecasting for petroleum industry is one of the responsibilities of the Indian Institute of Petroleum (IIP ). It helps industries select the best foreign technologies and develop indigenous technologies. Monetary aid from UNIDO and UNDP have improved the various research and development facilities of the institute.
